Discover the 5 Top Causes of Hearing Loss and How to Protect Your Hearing

The most common causes of hearing loss are acute exposure to very loud noises, exposure to noise over time, reactions to ototoxic medications, ear infections and genetic causes. Following we explain them in detail…

1. Noise-Induced Hearing Loss

● Cause: Prolonged exposure to loud noises, such as those from machinery, concerts, or music, can damage the delicate structures of the inner ear.

● Effect: Permanent damage to the sensory cells in the ear, leading to hearing loss, often in both ears.

● Prevention: Use ear protection in noisy environments and limit exposure to loud sounds.

2. Age-Related Hearing Loss (Presbycusis)

● Cause: As we age, the cumulative effect of noise exposure as we live life to the fullest causes gradual damage on the delicate hair cells within the inner ear – called stereocilia – that sense the sounds around us and transmit them to the auditory nerve. This type of hearing loss is common in people aged 50 or older and is a natural occurrence as we age.

● Effect: Gradual loss of hearing, typically starting with difficulty hearing high-pitched sounds such as speech.

● When it occurs: Typically affects individuals over 50 years old, though it can begin earlier.

3. Genetic Factors (Otitis Media)

● Cause: Hereditary conditions can cause hearing loss, either present at birth (congenital) or occurring later in life (progressive).

● Effect: Hearing loss can vary in severity and may be present from birth or develop gradually.

● When it occurs: Can affect people of any age, depending on the genetic condition.

4. Ear Infections (Otitis Media)

● Cause: Middle ear infections, often caused by bacteria or viruses, lead to fluid buildup behind the eardrum, affecting sound transmission.

● Effect: Temporary or, in severe cases, permanent hearing loss due to fluid in the middle ear.

● When it occurs: Common in children but can affect adults as well.

5. Ototoxic Medications

● Cause: Certain medications, such as chemotherapy drugs, some antibiotics, or high doses of aspirin, can damage the inner ear.

● Effect: Temporary or permanent hearing loss due to damage to the inner ear or auditory nerve.

● Prevention: Regular hearing monitoring when using ototoxic medications and consulting with a doctor for alternatives.

These are the most prevalent causes of hearing loss, but with proper prevention, early detection, and treatment, hearing loss can often be managed or mitigated. If you notice changes in your hearing, it's important to promptly seek the advice of a hearing healthcare professional such as an audiologists, a hearing instrument specialist or an ENT doctor.
