Tinnitus and Hearing Loss: What’s the Link?

If you’ve ever experienced a persistent ringing, buzzing, or hissing sound in your ears, especially when it’s quiet, you might be dealing with tinnitus.  Tinnitus is a common problem: It affects about 15% to 20% of the population and is especially common in older adults.  For many people, tinnitus can be frustrating and even overwhelming. What some may not realize is that tinnitus and hearing loss are often closely connected.

Here’s how they’re related and how we can help.

What Is Tinnitus?

Tinnitus is when you experience ringing or other noises in one or both of your ears but the noise that you hear when you have tinnitus isn’t caused by an external sound and other people can’t hear it. This sound can be constant or occasional, and it varies in pitch and intensity. While tinnitus is not a condition itself, it is often a symptom of an underlying issue, most commonly linked to hearing health.

How Is Tinnitus Connected to Hearing Loss?

Studies show that 80% to 90% of people with tinnitus also have some degree of hearing loss. This connection is due to damage in the tiny hair cells of the inner ear, which are responsible for processing sound. When these cells are affected by age, noise exposure, or other factors, the brain may compensate by generating internal noise, which we experience as tinnitus.

Can Hearing Aids Help?

Yes. For most individuals, hearing aids can provide meaningful relief from tinnitus. By amplifying external sounds, hearing aids reduce the contrast between background noise and the internal ringing, making the tinnitus less noticeable. Some hearing aids also offer built-in sound therapy features to help mask or manage the symptoms.
